In this report, we are going to find out the opinion of students 16/17 years old about the noise problems in our school due to recent complaints. We asked a total of 6 questions to 100 students and analysed the results, which provided some interesting information.

Question 1: Do you like the sound of the bell?

As far as the first question of the interview about the sound of the school bell, just under 50% of the students replied that they disliked the bell and that it was too loud and noisy. The other 50% said that they liked it or that they didn’t notice it. Furthermore, some of them said that in some classrooms they couldn’t hear the bell.

Question 2: Is the gym too noisy?

Moving on to the question about noise levels in the gym, well over two-thirds of the students felt that the gym was too noisy and would prefer a quieter environment when they play or run. However, just under a third of the students said they didn’t find the noise to be an issue because they didn’t mind it.

Question 3: Should there be a quiet space for eating?

Moving on to the third question about quiet places to eat, just under 65% of students said that in the basement there aren’t any places for eating that aren’t classrooms. The other part of the students, nearly 35%, instead thought that, as well as the classrooms in the basement, there are other quiet places where students can eat lunch before the afternoon lessons.

Question 4: Would you like to have background music in the library?

Regarding the question about background music in the library, a little more than 60% of students preferred to have music while studying. On the other hand, 38% stated that they would rather keep the library completely silent. These results suggest that, while most people are in favour of background music, a considerable number still prioritize a quiet atmosphere.

Question 5: Can you always hear what your teacher is saying in class?

As for the question about whether you can hear the teachers when they’re talking, 59% of the students said that they can hear them without problems, but the other 41% can’t clearly understand what they’re saying; they explained that it depends on classmates, if they talk a lot and therefore disturb the lesson, preventing others to clear it up, and also on the teacher’s tone of voice.

Question 6: Does the noise from outside (traffic, work in progress) distract you during the lessons?

Regarding the noise from outside, just over 50% of the students thought that these noises were too loud and distracted them during the lessons. However, approximately half of the students said that noises from traffic and work in progress didn’t bother them.

In conclusion, the majority of the people think that the noise doesn’t disturb lessons and they can clearly hear the teacher. Some areas (such as the gym) are too noisy, according to the students, but they would like to have background music in common spaces. Probably there aren’t big problems with noise and the students don’t have a particular issue to complain about.
